Overview:

Dana Biosphere Reserve is a nature reserve in Jordan covering 300 km². It is located in south-western Jordan in the Dana and Wadi Mujib Nature Reserves. It is the largest nature reserve in Jordan and is an important habitat for a variety of species of wildlife and plants. The reserve is managed by the Royal Society for the Conservation of Nature. History:

Dana Biosphere Reserve (DBR) is believed to have existed for hundreds of years and has long been inhabited by a variety of cultures throughout its history, including the Ancient Nabataean, Roman, Byzantine, and Islamic periods. The area is also known for its rich archaeological sites. It was between the 18th and 20th centuries that the traditional Arab lifestyle of the region began to be documented in an organized fashion, through the work of British explorer TE Lawrence, British scholars TE Lawrence and Gertrude Bell. In 1989, the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan began working on creating Dana Biosphere Reserve (DBR) in order to protect the biodiversity of the area and promote sustainability. By 1992, King Hussein had declared Dana Biosphere Reserve (DBR) a protected nature reserve, focusing its efforts on education, conservation, and research endeavors. In 1993, the Dana Reserve Management Centre (DRMC) was created in order to facilitate the management of the area, and local stakeholders and local residents were invited to shape the management of DBR. Later, in 2003, the World Bank funded a major renovation of the Dana Reserve, resulting in improved roads and infrastructure in the area, as well as improvements in water and sanitation services. Today, the Dana Biosphere Reserve (DBR) actively manages the area for conservation and sustainable development. The area is an important component of the Jordan Trail, a network of trails used for tourism that connects the main regions of Jordan. The area is home to over 800 plant species and 180 bird species, and is one of the most important bird habitats in Jordan.
