History:
The temple was constructed at the behest of the Emperor Hadrian, who wanted to create a grand monument to celebrate the glory and power of the Roman Empire. The temple, located in the Semetic city of Amman, was part of a larger effort to bring the Greek and Roman cultures together. While the temple has endured for nearly two millenniums, its exact date of construction is not known for certain. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Jordan.

The temple was constructed in a Corinthian style and is adorned with several sculptures including a statue of Hercules, as well as statues of other gods and goddesses, animals and deities. The temple was once surrounded by a wall, but this has since been removed. Within the temple grounds, there have been numerous archaeological findings including a second century A.D. sarcophagus, which is now on display in a nearby museum. The temple has undergone extensive renovations and repairs in the 21st century, some of which have incorporated modern design elements, such as a staircase and outdoor seating.
