History:
The palace was built by the Umayyad Caliphate in the mid-7th century to serve as their seat of power in Syria. Built by caliph Muawiyya I, the palace was designed to be the ultimate testament to Umayyad power, containing a grand mosque, residential apartments, baths, and courtyards. The palace remained in use until it was destroyed by the Mongol armies in 1260. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Jordan.

The Umayyad Palace complex covers an area of roughly three hectares and is made up of several interconnecting courtyards and halls, making it one of the largest and most impressive medieval Islamic structures in the world. It is also a great example of the traditional Islamic architecture and features significant artistic elements, such as carved stonework, colorful tiles, and decorated stucco.

The Umayyad Palace is now a museum and open to the public. There are several guided tours available, providing visitors with the opportunity to explore the palace complex in all its glory. Tours are also available of the Palace's grand mosque, which is still in use today and contains some of the most impressive Islamic art in the world.
