History:

The House of Parliament in Amman, Jordan is the lower house of the bicameral legislature of the Kingdom of Jordan. It was originally established in 1921 under the British Mandate over Jordan as the Legislative Council and was considered the first representative legislative body in Jordan. The Council functioned as the legislative assembly of the Transjordanian side of the Jordan Mandate until 1946 when the Emirate of Transjordan became the independent Hashemite Kingdom of Transjordan. In 1953, the country's name was changed to The Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan and the Legislative Council was renamed the House of Representatives. The composition of the House changed several times throughout the years as the country experienced political transformations. In 1954, the King of Jordan dissolved the House in response to political turmoil and the country operated under an appointed executive council until 1989. During the 1989 Jordanian parliamentary elections, the House was re-established and the first session of the newly inaugurated House opened in April of 1989. The House of Representatives went through a significant expansion in 1997 when the King held elections for a newly established upper house known as the Senate. With this expansion, the House of Parliament was officially established as the main legislative arm of the government. The House of Parliament is currently made up of 150 Members who are elected by popular vote. The Members are assigned to electoral districts and have to meet certain requirements in order to compete in the elections. Select Members of the House serve as Ministers in the Cabinet, and they are responsible for proposing legislation and debating laws passed by the Senate.
