Mount Nebo is an ancient mountain top located in modern day Jordan known for its religious significance in the Abrahamic religions. It is believed by Jewish, Christian and Islamic traditions to be the burial place of Moses, and is mentioned in the Bible as the place where Moses first saw the Holy Land. The earliest known reference to Mount Nebo is found in the book of Deuteronomy, which describes a visit by Moses to the “top of Pisgah”. As told in the Bible, Moses was forbidden from entering the promised land, instead allowed to view it from the mountaintop. Traditionally, Mount Nebo was also believed to be the location of Moses’ burial place. Over the years, Mount Nebo was held sacred by a variety of faiths. In the 4th century CE, a basilica was built on the mountain’s summit by order of the Roman emperor Constantine.
