Shobak Castle In Jordan: History,Facts, & Services

Shobak Castle is a 12th century Crusader castle located in present-day southern Jordan. Built by Baldwin I of Jerusalem during the late 1140s, the castle served as a military outpost for the Franks during the Latin Kingdom of Jerusalem. Over time, the castle was passed between various rulers until it was abandoned in 1187 after Saladin’s successful siege of Jerusalem. History:

The castle was originally built in 1115 by Baldwin I, who had just become king of Jerusalem. He chose the site in southern Jordan because of its proximity to Damascus, which was then the seat of the Muslim Seljuq kingdom. The castle was designed to protect Frankish lands in the region and serve as a base for Baldwin's operations against Muslim forces. The castle is located near the town of Ma'an and is now part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Petra. 5. Shobak Castle offers tours to the general public, as well as educational programs for students of all ages. The castle is open daily (except Sunday) from 8am to 5pm. The site also offers a museum, restaurant, and gift shop.
