History:

The original mosque in what is now the Grand Husseini Mosque was built in the early 20th century by Sheikh Taleb Al-Azhari, a leading Muslim leader at the time. He began construction in 1924, and the mosque was named after him. When he died in 1939, his sons renamed it after themselves as a tribute to their father. By 1948, the mosque had been divided into two sections, with the northern half being used as a synagogue by the new Israeli settlers. In 1966, the Jordanian government funded the restoration of the mosque and re-established its Islamic character.
