Salt Türk Şehitliği In Jordan: History,Facts, & Services

Salt Türk Şehitliği is a memorial park in the town of Salt in Turkey dedicated to the memory of fallen soldiers from World War I. The memorial was built in 1960 and opened to the public in 1965. It is set on a hill overlooking Salt, which lies about 38 kilometres (24 mi) east of Ankara. The memorial park consists of a number of monuments and sculptures as well as an arch and a museum. The various memorials honour the dead from World War I and other conflicts, including the Turkish War of Independence. It is one of the best churches in Jordan which you must visit.

History:

The dream of creating a memorial dedicated to the dead of World War I began in the 1950s when a Salt lawyer and former commander of an Ottoman cavalry regiment, Mehmet Nazif Bey, and other local residents began to push for its realization. Salt Türk Şehitliği opened to the public in 1965, the fortieth anniversary of the end of World War I. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Jordan.

The memorial park covers an area of 315,000 square metres (7.9 acres) and is home to the graves of over 15,000 fallen soldiers and their families. There is also a museum which houses a range of battle relics, including firearms, photographs and documents. The memorial also has several monuments and sculptures, including a giant marble sculpture of a soldier overlooking the site, a bronze Anıtkabir (memorial for Ataturk) and an arch dedicated to the soldiers.
