Fortress of Umm ar-Rasas (Old Roman City) is an archaeological site located about 30 kilometers southeast of the city of Madaba, Jordan. The site is known for being home to well-preserved ruins from the ancient Roman, Byzantine and early Islamic periods. The site includes a series of military, religious and civil structures, including a temple, a church, a palace and a city wall. It is one of the best churches in Jordan which you must visit.

History:

Umm ar-Rasas was occupied from the Hellenistic-Roman period until the Umayyad period. During the 4th century CE, Umm ar-Rasas gained importance as an administrative center of the Byzantines and later on as a trading stop on the pilgrimage route to Mecca. In the 7th and 8th centuries, the Umayyad Caliphs built a series of palaces, mosques and ceremonial buildings, transforming it into a major cultural and religious center. This included the construction of a monumental mosque that was part of a larger complex with a Byzantine church and Umayyad palace. Fortress of Umm ar-Rasas is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with several well-preserved monuments that provide insight into all the cultural layers of its past. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Jordan.
