History:

The Jordan Museum of Popular Traditions was founded in 1971. It was initially called the Folklore Museum and its purpose was to preserve and educate the public about the traditional cultures of Jordan. The founder of the museum, Dr. Hussein al-Salim, a professor in the faculty of Applied Arts at the University of Jordan, wanted to ensure that future generations of Jordanians be aware of their cultural heritage and identity. The museum is located in down-town Amman in the area known as Tell. It is housed in a restored mansion that was built in the late 19th century. The museum's collection includes artifacts, manuscripts, photographs, books, textiles, jewelry, tools and musical instruments. Many of these items are on display, alongside historic photographs that explain the everyday lives and customs of the people of Jordan throughout history. The museum also actively organizes cultural heritage events and workshops, such as art, theatre and poetry performances. In 2011, the museum underwent major renovations and was re-opened by HM King Abdullah II. It was given a new name: the Jordan Museum of Popular Traditions (JMPT).
