History:

The Azraq wetland reserve, located in the Azraq Oasis in the eastern part of Jordan is one of the most important areas for wetland conservation in the Middle East. It is home to a variety of rare species of plants and animals, and is a vital bird migration corridor. The site was designated as a wetland reserve in 1978 and has been listed under the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands since 1992, and is an IUCN protected area since 1996. The reserve is fed by mildly mineralized subsurface water from a large marshy area known as Hawa. This wetland system provides important refuge, breeding, and wintering areas for globally threatened water-birds. Additionally, the surrounding shrub and woodlands are possible breeding grounds for much sought-after raptor species. The reserve’s surface area has decreased by almost a half compared to its original size due to a number of factors, including over-pumping of water for irrigation, poor management of water resources, and the diversion of artificial channels for agricultural projects. In recent years, there has been a commitment by the Jordanian government to improve the health of the reserve, including a major rehabilitation project. This project includes improved water management, reducing the number of alien plant species, and restoring native wetland vegetation.
