The Arch of Hadrian is an imposing marble arch that was erected in Athens in 131 AD to honor the Roman emperor Hadrian (117-138 AD). He visited Athens two years earlier and, in admiration of the city’s culture played a prominent role in the establishment of new public buildings and monuments in the city. Via Hadriana, where it join in with the ancient Panathenaic Way which runs across the center of Athens stretching from the Acropolis to its Roman agora. • Built in 131 AD the Arch of Hadrian was originally part of a longer wall. • Each side of the arch has four semi-columns with Corinthian style capitals decorated with acanthus leaves. • The main inscription on the arch is written in Latin and reads “παρὰ τὸν θεὸν καὶ τοῦ Ἁδριανοῦ” which translates to “By the grace of god, and of Hadrian”. • The Arch of Hadrian was built with Pentelic marble, extracted from nearby quarries, and features side sculptures of two four-horse chariots with a human figure standing between them.
