History:

Saint Elijah's Hill, also known as Mukawir in Arabic, is an ancient fortress located in modern-day Jordan, about 32 kilometres southeast of Amman. The fortress is believed to date back to the 10th century BCE, and may have been occupied until the 15th century CE. It was the site of significant historical events, such as the Battle of Hab, the expulsion of the early Christians from Jerusalem, and the death of John the Baptist. The earliest trace of human occupancy at Mukawir dates back to the 10th century BCE, as evidenced by pottery and stone tools found at the site. During the time of the Crusades, the site was the stronghold of the important Crusading ruler Tancred, and was known as Mons Gibeonis or Mountains of Geba. It was later taken back by the Muslim Syrians in 1187. The fortress was the site of the infamous Battle of Hab in 1170 CE when Saladin and his troops defeated the Crusaders in a siege. This set off the expulsion of the Christians from Palestine. It was also the place where John the Baptist is believed to have been beheaded by King Herod in the year 32 CE. Mukawir also has a long history of Christian pilgrimage, as the site is believed to have once been a place of religious gathering. Evidence found at the site suggests that Christians from the 4th century worshipped there. Since 1967, Mukawir has been part of modern Jordan and is now protected as a national park.
