History:

Abu Darwish Mosque is one of the oldest and most iconic mosques in Amman, Jordan. It is located in the downtown area known as the “Hussainiya Quarter” or the “Old City”. The mosque was built in the 12th century by Nur Ed Din Abu Darwasheh, a famous nobleman of the Ayyubid Dynasty. Originally, the mosque served as a school of Islamic studies. Over the centuries, it gained its reputation as the hub of religious studies in Jordan and the surrounding area. Throughout the centuries, it was expanded many times and underwent numerous renovations. In the 1600s, Sultan Murad IV added a clock to the minaret of the mosque, thus becoming the first mosque in the region with a clock tower. In 1895, the High Commissioner of Syria and Palestine ordered its renovation and the rebuilding of its turrets. The reconstructed mosque had a large courtyard and two arched entrances on either side. The mosque was further renovated in the early 2000s, when several architectural elements from the past such as its split arches and a grand prayer chamber were added. Today, the mosque is considered a major tourist attraction in Jordan. The building is a registered UNESCO World Heritage Site and is visited by thousands of people each year.
