The church stands on the site of a 4th-century Byzantine basilica and underwent a major renovation in the 19th century. History:

The church is said to have been built in the 4th century over the site of an older Byzantine basilica and a small grotto known as the Tomb of James the Great. The basilica has seen considerable renovations, destruction and repurposing over the centuries due to various wars and conquests. By the 16th century, it had been converted into a mosque. At the end of the 19th century, the church was restored to its original form and inaugurated by Pope Pius IX in 1898. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Jerusalem.
