The Monastry dates back to the 6th century, when the Saint Savior Basilica was built to house the remains of the martyred Saint Savior. It was later absorbed into the Franciscan Order, was given status as a parish and underwent major renovations, including the construction of a new monastery and church in the 16th-17th centuries. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Jerusalem.
