The exact date of establishment of the church is not known but it is believed to have been founded by the Apostles St. Peter and St. Thomas in the 1st Century AD. The original church is believed to have been destroyed by the Persian forces under Khusrau in 614 AD. The current church dates back to the 19th century and was built by the Patriarch of the Syriac Orthodox Church, Ignatius IV (1724-1817). This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Jerusalem.
