The idea of an Adventist presence in Jerusalem began in the 1950s under the leadership of Elder Mervyn Maxwell, an eminent Adventist theologian and missionary. Maxwell and his colleagues organized the Israel Mission of the Seventh-day Adventists, which would later become the International Seventh-day Adventist Church in Jerusalem. Initially, the church served as a gathering place for immigrants from the former Soviet Union, and the focus was on education and fellowship. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Jerusalem.
