Oe Tenshudo Church is a Roman Catholic church located in Settsu City, Osaka, Japan. It is known for its historical ties with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and other government-related organizations. The building is one of the oldest historical sites in Osaka and is considered a National Treasure. Oe Tenshudo Church History Oe Tenshudo Church was constructed in 1693 and is the first church built by Europeans in Japan. It took three years to complete the church and its main purpose was to minister to merchants and sailors from Europe. The government prohibited evangelizing but allowed the missionary to construct the church. Over the years, Oe Tenshudo Church was relocated a few times to accommodate population changes. In 1870, it was relocated to the current location and named Oe Tenshudo in 1889. The current building is a combination of Italian Gothic and Romanesque styles and is where the oil painting of Madonna and child by Spanish painter Santiago Suarez hangs prominently.
