The church holds a long history and was founded soon after the Meiji era Reforms of 1868. Around that time, many Christian missionaries were traveling to Japan, spreading the word of Christianity (among them the famous Saint Francis Xavier). In 1890, one such missionary, the Rev.Takashi Calender, began teaching in the small village of Oiwake. Initially, the congregation met in homes, but with the donations of various local patrons, the construction of the Karuizawa Oiwake Church was completed in October of 1900.
