The cathedral is located in the Meieki area of Nagoya and is part of the Archdiocese of Nagoya. It is the largest Catholic cathedral in Japan. History The Nagoya cathedral of St. Peter and St. Paul was founded in 1911. The original buildings were destroyed during the Second World War, but plans for the current structure were drawn up in 1952 and construction was completed in 1958. The cathedral was designed in the Romanesque style that is seen in many other churches throughout the world. Facts The cathedral is 150 meters tall, making it one of the tallest in Japan. It has a capacity of over 3,000 worshippers and can house over 6,000 people inside its walls. The main altar of the cathedral is made of oak and was made in France. There are 7 chapels inside the cathedral and they are dedicated to different saints and apostles. There is also a baptistery and an organ. The ceiling is decorated with a large fresco painted in 1960 by Japanese artist Jun Matsuyama. Services The Nagoya cathedral of St. Peter and St. Paul provides Mass every Sunday and other holy days.
