At Kiyomizu-dera, a large part of the worship and reverence of the temple is through the recitation of sutras (Buddhist chants). As a visitor to the temple, one will be welcomed by monks and nuns in beautiful robes. They will then invite the group to join in the sutra recitation, where the group will pay homage to the various bodhisattvas of Kiyomizu-dera. Through this process, attendees are able to express their devotion and gratitude towards the different gods and goddesses of the temple. This involves cleansing oneself with water from a small vessel and then blessing the vessel with various prayers and mantras.
