History:

The church was founded in 1910 by the Russian merchants who had immigrated to Ishinomaki City during the period of Russian culture which reached Japan in the late nineteenth century, often referred to as the ‘wave of Russian culture’. The church is named after the apostle Saint John and was built with the help of donations given by the modest but giving local community. During the Russo-Japanese War in 1905, the church was damaged, but was restored soon afterwards.
