Worship Method:

Hon-ji Senju-ji is a Japanese Buddhist temple located in the city of Gotemba, Shizuoka Prefecture. The temple is a branch temple of the Rissho Kosei-kai, a Nichiren Buddhist organization, and its main line of worship is Jōdokyō, a denomination of Nichiren Buddhism. As such, the traditional worship method at Hon-ji Senju-ji is a form of Shin Chan Buddhism, a school of Buddhism which follows the teachings of Nichiren. In line with Shin Chan Buddhism’s core belief, worshippers at Hon-ji Senju-ji are asked to chant “Nam-Myoho-Renge-Kyo” – which translates to “devotion to the teachings of the Lotus Sutra” – with the aim of achieving enlightenment. Upon entering the temple’s main hall, worshippers are asked to bow three times to pay respects to the Buddhas and bodhisattvas, and also to the senior priest. The priest will then give a reading of the sutra, after which the worshippers will proceed to chant “Nam-Myoho-Renge-Kyo”. Finally, worshippers will offer their alms or gifts to the Buddhas and bodhisattvas. The Hon-ji Senju-ji temple also offers other activities in addition to its traditional worship. These include meditation classes, lectures, and classes on Shin Chan Buddhism. The temple also produces a number of informational materials for those interested in learning more about this particular branch of Buddhism. This most visited temple in Japan
