Catholic Church Hakodate Motomachi is a Roman Catholic church in the city of Hakodate, Japan. It was the first church in Japan to be affiliated with the Roman Catholic Church, though the location of the original church is unknown. The current church building was built in 1753 by a missionary to Japan, Father Maubant Blanchot. The Catholic Church Hakodate Motomachi History is closely tied to the story of João Rodrigues. A Portuguese missionary, he first arrived in Japan in 1578 with the goal of converting people to Catholicism. During his time in Japan, he faced frequent persecution and was eventually arrested and executed in 1597. Even after his death, Rodrigues’s legacy lived on, with the Hakodate church becoming his lasting contribution to the city and the faith.
