Al-Nabi Yunus Mosque is an ancient mosque located in the city of Mosul, Iraq. It is known for being the original mosque built in the city, and was the oldest mosque in Iraq prior to its destruction in 2017 by the Islamic State (IS). The mosque was dedicated to Nabi (Prophet) Yunus (Jonah), who is said to be buried in Mosul. The dome and minaret of the mosque were destroyed during the US-led invasion of Iraq in 2003. It was rebuilt and reopened in 2006. However, with the increasing presence of IS in the region, the mosque fell victim to their destruction and was demolished in 2017. The ceiling of the mosque is decorated with the highly-stylized Islamic calligraphic panels in both Kufic and Thuluth styles. The walls feature stucco decorations and coloured marble panels, and the lower walls are adorned with large teakwood prayer mats.
