Brief History:
is one of the oldest mosques in Basra, Iraq. It was constructed during the Fatimid Caliphate in 712 AD, by al-Mansur, the then-governor of Basra. The mosque was later refurbished in the late 11th century, and now features the same pale yellow walls and the intricate decorations of that period. The mosque is an important religious and cultural center for citizens of Basra, hosting many religious gatherings and cultural events. The Al-Rahman Mosque in Basra, Iraq is a large mosque in the city center, located near the waterway. It was constructed in the early 1500s and extensively renovated in 1693 due to a fire. The mosque complex is composed of four main structures, the most prominent of which is the rectangular mosque building. This consists of a large courtyard, flanked on either side by two tall minarets, with the southern minaret boasting an impressive 35m diameter dome. The mosque is faced to Mecca, directed through two large ceramic-designed mihrabs (prayer niches). It also features a low row of twelve columns lined up along the walls of the hall. Within the mosque, metal lamps, prayer rugs and decorative items are among the ornate decorations. The mosque complex also includes a burial chamber, prayer hall, and theological schools. The balconies of the minarets are also adorned with intricate arabesques and glass tiles. On either side of the front of the mosque, two very large entrance portals are decorated with colourful floral designs and both minarets feature unique ornamental designs. The mosque is an impressive example of Iraqi architecture that has remained preserved throughout the years. This is why, it is considered one of the most beautiful mosque in the world.
