Brief History:
Baiturrahman Mosque is the main mosque located in the city of Mataram in Indonesia. It was built by the sixth ruler of Mataram, Sultan Agung, during his reign in 1634. It is believed that before he passed away, Sultan Agung also released a written decree entitling the mosque to be the main mosque of Mataram and allowed the his body to lay there. Baiturrahman Mosque underwent restructuring in 1967, especially in its dome and minaret, most of which were made of bricks and underwent restoration. Furthermore, the development of the mosque has led to other buildings that support the progress of Mosque Baiturrahman, such as the Ma'thum building which is used for daily prayers and there are also other multi-function buildings. As an architectural landmark, the mosque is known for its impressive square minaret architecture, often referred to as the Kiai Ageng (Great Imam) Minaret. Its main dome is about 28 m high, and also known for its beautiful ornaments. The mosque serves as the center for several important religious activities in Mataram. Apart from being a place of worship, it is also a major Islamic center for education and a place for other activities like tafsir lectures, fiqih classes and seminar, among others. The mosque is currently managed by the Dinas Paroki (Parochial Services) of Mataram. It is one of the most famous mosque in Indonesia which you must visit.
Architecture:
The Baiturrahman Great Mosque of Mataram is an iconic landmark built in the 17th century during the Sultanate of Mataram. This grand mosque includes two distinct architectural styles and houses the largest dome in Indonesia. Exterior The pronounced dome, visible from all angles of the city, anchors the mosque’s exterior and serves as a focal point on its facade. The exterior walls are mostly plain, without notable adornments. They are made of volcanic andesite blocks with a few sections carved with intricate reliefs. At the four corners of the building, four minarets with tall spires add to the majestic character of the building. Interior The building’s interior is located inside an impressive main hall with eight large pillars, and an inscription by Sultan Agung himself adorns one of the walls. The central space of the main hall houses the largest dome in Indonesia, visible from both the interior and exterior. This Islamic-style dome is constructed from coral blocks, which are extremely durable and resistant to earthquakes. Decorations and Artwork The decorations and artwork of Baiturrahman Mosque reflect the rich Islamic history of Mataram. An elaborate yellow-and-blue tiled floor adorns the main hall at the center, and intricate ornamentation is also found on the walls and dome of the building. Colors and flower patterns are used to decorate the edifice, while calligraphy of verses from the Quran is inscribed on the pillars and walls. This is why, it is considered one of the most beautiful mosque in the world.
Visiting Hours:
Baiturrahman Mosque is open for visits every day from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm. The mosque is closed from 12:00 pm to 2:00 pm for the prayer times. Visitors are asked to respect the mosque premises and wear modest clothing. best mosque in the world.
