Famous as the Great Mosque of Surabaya, Al-Muttaqin Mosque was built in 1947 under the advisement and initiative of Ahmad Kasim despite numerous economic and political problems besetting Surabaya at the time. The mosque was based on the architecture of the Great Mosque of Damascus in Syria and it is the largest mosque in the city. It was completed three years later with an Ottoman style richly decorated with Arabesque arches inside and Islamic decorative motifs on the facade. Architecture:

The Al-Muttaqin Mosque, also known as Gedung Gading Mosque, is a historic mosque located in the Gedung Gading area of Surabaya in Indonesia. The mosque was built in 1919, during the Dutch East Indies era and is located near the Semolowaru region. The mosque was built with a combination of European and Middle Eastern elements, making it a hybrid of both west and east architecture. The overall structure of the mosque follows the traditional style of Middle Eastern mosques, with a rectangular-shaped building and large domed roof. As part of the European influence, the Al-Muttaqin Mosque is built on a stepped foundation and features white-washed walls with arch-shaped windows. The mosque also has a terrace with a large portico, a feature commonly seen in European buildings. The interior of the Al-Muttaqin Mosque consists of a central hall, with an elevated mihrab (prayer niche) at the qibla wall, indicating the direction of Mecca. The mihrab is framed by an ornate jaali latticework. The mosque also features a number of intricately carved wooden columns and pillars, and the entire interior is decorated with Islamic art and calligraphy. The exterior of the mosque has several large domes and minarets, many of which are covered in ceramics or carved stone, a feature common to traditional Middle Eastern mosques. The minarets are topped with colorful kaleidoscopic domes, which are painted in blue and yellow colors.
