It was built by Hadhrami merchants, a group of traders and entrepreneurs from the Hadhramaut region (present-day East Yemen) who had immigrated to Surabaya. Located approximately two kilometers from the old port city of Bungah, the Al-Muhajirin Mosque was an important center for the city’s foreign traders and immigrants. As such, the mosque has been integral to the history of the city, and has become one of its most recognizable symbols. Despite its historic importance, it is not a particularly large mosque and stands in contrast to the newer and much larger mosques in the city.
