Overview:
Located in the eastern part of Assam, the Bihuurja temple of Bichpuria is one of the oldest temples in the state. It is believed to be built during the Gupta dynasty period, sometime in the fifth century. The temple is unique because of its unique Yupa Pillars, two in number. These pillars are believed to be the earliest forms of pillars adorning the temple complex and are made from black stone. The Yupa Pillars and their inscriptions draw a huge number of visitors to the temple as they offer a glimpse into the lost past. This national monument of India portrays the history and culture of the country.
History:
The Yupa Pillars of the Bichpuria temple are considered to be the earliest form of pillars adorning the temple. The pillars are of an unusual design and workmanship and have various carvings and inscriptions on them. The carvings of the pillar are mainly of religious scenes. It is believed that the pillars are inscribed with a stone carving in the Gupta script, but have now worn out due to natural wear and tear.
