Overview:
Vijaydurg Fort is a majestic structure situated in Ratnagiri district of Maharashtra. It is a huge fort which stands atop the sea, making it one of the most spectacular seafront forts in the country. It is situated on the Arabian Sea coast, about two kilometers south of the Janjira fort. The fort is also called the "ever victorious" because of its many battles and numerous victories. This national monument of India portrays the history and culture of the country.
History:
The fort is surrounded by strong walls and huge bastions. The fort has three sturdy gates, one of which is in the eastern side, another in the southern side and the third in the western side. There are several other imposing structures like palaces, dwellings, many mosques and two huge cisterns. The fort has six independent brass cannons that were considered powerful during the Mughal era. There is also a secret tunnel leading to the sea which was used by the armies to check the incoming enemy ships. You must visit one of these historical places in India on your India tour

1. The entrance of Vijaydurg Fort is known for its grand Gateway. 2. The fort was awarded by Marathas to Chimaji Appa for his brave victory against the Portuguese at Vasai Fort. 3. The two huge cisterns of the fort can hold up to 1,50,000 gallons of water. 4. The secret tunnel of the fort is said to stretch up to the Shelve village. 5.
