Overview:
Anglo Sikh War Memorial, Misriwala is a monument dedicated to the brave warriors who fought a heroic battle against the forces of the British East India Company in December 1845, during the Second Anglo-Sikh War. It stands at the site of the Battle of Sobraon, which was the final engagement of the war and resulted in a decisive victory for the East India Company. This national monument of India portrays the history and culture of the country.
History:
This memorial is a marble obelisk that stands 12 feet high and 4 feet in diameter and weighs nearly 10,000 pounds. The memorial is addressed by four large and two small tablets, inscribed in English and Gurmukhi with details of the brave and gallant actions of many of the Sikh warriors who fought and laid down their lives in that historic battle. The Battle of Sobraon was the last struggle of the Second Anglo-Sikh War and took place on 10 February 1846. The East India Company won the battle and the war, signing a treaty with the Sikhs that ceded the Punjab region to British India. The memorial was built in 1891, commemorating the 45th anniversary of the battle. It was constructed by the North West Frontier Province's local government at the time, which was then under the control of the British Raj.
