Vidyasankara Temple is a famous Hindu temple situated in Thiruvananthapuram (Trivandrum), Kerala, India. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, the temple is known for its intricate architecture, sculptures, and religious assembly. The temple is a prominent pilgrimage site for devotees of Lord Shiva, attracting thousands of pilgrims and tourists every year. This national monument of India portrays the history and culture of the country.
History:
The temple features a number of shrines housing deities of the Hindu pantheon such as Parvathi, Ganesh, and Surya, besides the main shrine devoted to Shiva. The legend behind the temple goes back to the age of Mahabharata and the temple is believed to be as old as 21000 years ago. Subsequently, it was renovated by the Tuluva Dynasty in 1540. The temple was then further expanded by Maharaja Marthanda Varma in 1759. In the 19th century, Keshava Pillai, a famous poet and scholar, wrote a book titled the Vidyasankara Temple at Thiruvananthapuram and made it popular.
