Unnamed tomb Overview The Unnamed Tomb is an ancient, highly decorated tomb in the ancient city of Petra, a UNESCO World Heritage Site located in southern Jordan. It is believed to have been created in the late first century or early second century CE during the Roman period. The tomb is renowned for its carved facade and its exquisite decorations. Unnamed tomb Prominent Features The Unnamed Tomb features elaborately carved reliefs with Greek and Nabatean inscriptions, including two large sandstone lions, two parabolic arches, and a portico that rests atop a podium. Along the sides of the facade are Greek inscriptions naming the owner of the tomb, though the name remains unknown. Unnamed tomb History The Unnamed Tomb is believed to have been built in the late first century or early second century CE during the Roman period. It likely replaced an earlier temple that likely had Nabatean origins. Before its destruction, the site was likely used for special occasions, such as private funerals and festivals. Unnamed tomb Interesting facts The Unnamed Tomb is often referred to as “The Tomb without a Name” because the identity of its owner remains unknown. The site is also sometimes referred to as “The Mysterious Tomb” because of the tomb’s finely crafted exterior. The tomb is located on the hill of el-Deir, which is the same hill where ancient Nabateans worshipped their gods and goddesses.
