Quila (Inderpat) or Delhi is an ancient fort located in the historic city of Delhi. It is located on the banks of river Yamuna, in the heart of Delhi. The Purana Quila was originally built by Humayun, the second Mughal emperor of India, in 1533-1555 AD. The fort was named after Inderpat, another name for Humayun. History:
The walls surrounding the fortress are 18 m high and have three gateways from east, north and south. There is a double line of defences and large water filled moat around the fort. The fort is surrounded by a defensive wall covering an area of 1.5 km, with powerful circular bastions between every two gates. Interesting facts:
There is an archaeological museum inside the fort which houses a collection of artifacts from the surrounding Harappan sites. It also has a famous showground known as Jantar Mantar which is a collection of fourteen huge instruments used in astronomical observations and calculations. The fort also houses a children's park, a popular picnic spot.
