fort is a historically significant fort located near the city of Palghar in Maharashtra, India. It was constructed by Shivaji Maharaj and is considered to be important in the establishment of Maratha power in the region. Due to its strategic location, Jaygad was the gateway to Mumbai, the island city of Vasai and the mountain ranges of Mokhada and Jawhar. This national monument of India portrays the history and culture of the country.
History:
The walls of the fort are thick and high and the structure as a whole is quite imposing. The fort also features bastions, entrance gates and an old temple dedicated to Lord Shiva known as Jay Ganesh. There are a number of Buddhist caves in the vicinity. The Mokhada and Jawhar mountain ranges can be seen in the backdrop of the fort. The fort was initially built by Raja Bhoj, the king of Shilahar dynasty, in the 12th century. It was later taken over by King Raja Singh, who was a vassal of Shivaji Maharaj. Shivaji occupied it and renamed it as Jaygad. It was under the Maratha rule till 1818 when it fell to the British forces.
