Overview:
Tomb of Khan-i-Khana is a historical monument located in Mehrauli, Delhi, India. It is the tomb of a high-ranking minister by the name of Khan-i-Khana during the reign of Mughal Emperor Akbar. The tomb was built in 1562 by Khan-i-Khana's wife, amidst a walled compound with a gate. This national monument of India portrays the history and culture of the country.
History:
The most prominent features of the Tomb are its rectangular courtyard, pillared alcoves and domed roof. The dome is supported by four corner minarets crowned with kalash finials. The wall of the compound is adorned with various Islamic motifs. The entrance of the compound is marked by a rectangular arched gateway which is decorated with Islamic tiles and inscriptions. Interesting facts:
The Tomb of Khan-i-Khana was declared a protected monument in 1948 by the Archaeological Survey of India. The Tomb is one of the earliest examples of Mughal Architecture in India and is also an example of Akbar’s use of Persian Elements in his construction projects. In addition, the unique black and yellow terracotta art around the Tomb, especially on the entrance gate of the compound, is believed to be one of its kind in the world. A two-day festival known as Id-e-Khan-i-Khana is celebrated here.
