After his defeat in the battle of Khanwa, Maharana Kumbha went in quest of divine help and reached the foot of a hill where he witnessed a Shiva Lingam that was being worshipped by a cobra. To seek protection from God, he offered to build a temple for him and proclaimed Ratneswar as the deity.
