Temple of Ratneswar In India: History,Facts, & Services
Overview:
The temple is located in the old walled city of Chittorgarh. It was built by Maharana Kumbha of Mewar Dynasty in 1449. Ratneswar temples feature an entrance gate from the eastern side and an open space with a number of ancient deities. The main deity of the temple is Lord Shiva, which is worshipped according to the Lingam-Pooja tradition. This national monument of India portrays the history and culture of the country.
History:
The temple has a magnificent architecture and houses lots of idols and sculptures. The walls of the temple are decorated with intricate dragon carvings, along with beautiful patterns and designs. It also houses a Shaivite library that contains manuscripts and inscriptions with great value. A large stone Nandi (bull) can also be spotted at the entrance gate of the temple. The Ratneswar Temple was built by Maharana Kumbha, who belonged to the Mewar Dynasty. After his defeat in the battle of Khanwa, Maharana Kumbha went in quest of divine help and reached the foot of a hill where he witnessed a Shiva Lingam that was being worshipped by a cobra. To seek protection from God, he offered to build a temple for him and proclaimed Ratneswar as the deity.
