, Panbari Ruins Overview Panbari Ruins are the ruins of an old Islamic fortification located near the village of Dhansar in the Darrang district of Assam, India. The ruins date back to the 16th century and are believed to have been built by the Mughals. The main interest in the ruins lies in the presence of a fort within the ruins. The fort, a massive stone structure, is spread over an area of 8 sq km and includes walls, ramparts, gateways, watch-towers, barracks, and a mosque. Panbari Ruins Prominent Features The fort features two gates, one on the east side and the other on the west side. The gates were connected by a long, arched hallway which was used to access the fort. The fort consists of several buildings, each of which served its own purpose. There are several watchtowers, built to provide security to the fort, and there is a large stone platform where the royals would congregate and hold meetings. The fort also houses a large mosque, the only one of its kind in the region. Panbari Ruins History The fort at Panbari Ruins is said to be one of the oldest Mughal-era fortifications in India and dates back to 1573. The ruins were abandoned after the Mughal Empire fell and were rediscovered in the late 19th century. The ruins were then rediscovered by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) in the late 1980s. The ASI subsequently declared the ruins a protected monument in 1990. Panbari Ruins Interesting facts The ruins of the fort are believed to have been built by a Mughal general by the name of Malik Firuz, who was in command of the nearby town of Dhansar. The fort is also known to have been used as a refuge for local villagers during the time of conflict between the Mughals and the Ahom dynasty. The ruins are also said to have served as an important trading hub for timber and spices during the Mughal era.
