Overview:
ellicherry Fort is a large seagoing fort situated in Thalassery, Kannur district in the state of Kerala, India. This is a historical European fort which was established by the British East India Company in 1708 and later occupied by the French and the Dutch, who altered its internal structure. The fort is located on the northern tip of the Hoshin Kavu beach and it is believed to have been built by the British East India Company in the early eighteenth century. The fort has witnessed many historic battles and sieges, which have shaped its history. This national monument of India portrays the history and culture of the country.
History:
Tellicherry Fort is one of the finest and earliest surviving European monuments in southern India. Its architecture is mainly Portuguese with some Dutch and British influences. The fort is double-walled and has three bastions, angled walls, and moats. The interiors of the fort contain a huge central courtyard surrounded by ramparts, bastions, and guardrooms. Tellicherry Fort was built in 1708 by the British East India Company. The fort was a stronghold for the Portuguese, Dutch, and British, who fought various wars and sieges here. It was attacked by the French commander-in-chief, De Bussy in 1778 and was taken under his control. The fort also faced a few sieges from Tipu Sultan and Hyder Ali. During the Second Anglo-Mysore War, the fort was taken over by the English East India Company forces from the forces of Tipu Sultan and Hyder Ali. Eventually, the fort was yielded to the British Raj in 1792 and it stayed with them until India's independence in 1947.
