Overview:
Sri Kanthirava Statue in Narasimha Temple is a famous and ancient Dravidian architecture situated in Srirangam, in the state of Tamil Nadu, India. It is one of the biggest and most important shrines dedicated to Lord Narasimha, the man-lion incarnation of Lord Vishnu. The temple is also known as Adi-Narasimha Kshetram and is part of the celebrated Divya Desams, the 108 temples of Lord Vishnu located all over the world. The Sri Kanthirava Statue of Narasimha is located on the left side of the sanctum sanctorum of the temple and is one of the most popular idols among worshippers of Narasimha. This national monument of India portrays the history and culture of the country.
History:
The Sri Kanthirava Statue in Narasimha Temple stands at about 10 feet tall and is believed to be about 1000 years old. It is the only surviving example of Chola Dynasty sculptures. The idol is made of a five-metal amalgam, known as 'Panchaloha'. It is adorned with gold and diamond jewellery. The murti also has a crown decorated with 108 Rudraksha beads. The Narasimha Temple is believed to have been built during the 8th century and has gone through several renovations scince then. The temple originally existed before the 11th century and was destroyed by the Delhi Sultanate during their marauding invasions of South India. However, the Statue of Sri Kanthirava Narasimha is believed to have been installed by the great Chola King, Parantaka Chola II, in the 10th century.
