The Shahi Masjid, also known as the Royal Mosque of Allahabad, is a late Mughal period mosque located in the city of Allahabad in Uttar Pradesh, India. The mosque was built during the reign of Nawab Shuja-ud-Daula in the year 1775. The mosque is one of the few surviving monuments from the Nawabi period and stands as a witness to the legacy of Royal Mughal architecture in the city. The roof of the mosque is adorned with blue tiles and the walls and plinths are made of red sandstone and white marble. The mosque houses a large prayer hall, a court of prayer, and four large minarets, each standing about 40 feet tall. The Shahi Masjid (Royal Mosque) of Allahabad is a part of an ancient Mughal complex and was built by Emperor Akbar in 1580 AD. The four-arched mosque is built completely of red sandstone, and its domes and minars are elaborately sculptured.The two towers rise to 25 m (82 ft) in height, and the facades of the edifice are studded with numerous carved arches and inscriptions from the Quran.The main prayer hall has nine arches, while the verandah has three arches on either side. The mosque features several columns, displays intricate stone carvings and is also adorned with five entrance gates of different sizes.The Shahi Masjid stands at the confluence of two rivers, the Ganga and Yamuna, and is said to represent the joining of two spiritual streams. The mosque was built in 1692 by Emperor Aurangzeb as an expression of his commitment to Islam and was originally known as Rabia Masjid (‘Level Mosque’). The Shahi Masjid is situated in the heart of Allahabad in an area called Motiganj. It is a large structure, featuring a theological college and a tekri (large rock outcrop) that affords a sweeping view of the city and the confluence of three rivers – the Ganges, Yamuna and Saraswati.
