The mosque houses a large prayer hall, a court of prayer, and four large minarets, each standing about 40 feet tall. Shahi Masjid, located in Allahabad, India, is one of the most important monuments in the city. The mosque was built in 1692 by Emperor Aurangzeb as an expression of his commitment to Islam and was originally known as Rabia Masjid (‘Level Mosque’). The Shahi Masjid is situated in the heart of Allahabad in an area called Motiganj. It is a large structure, featuring a theological college and a tekri (large rock outcrop) that affords a sweeping view of the city and the confluence of three rivers – the Ganges, Yamuna and Saraswati. The mosque is known for its two tall minarets and the chhatris or domes which are decorated with floral designs, inlaid precious stones and motifs of Mughal emperors. Getting to the mosque couldn’t be easier. It is a short 5 minute walk from Allahabad Junction railway station, whilst it is a 30 minute drive from Allahabad Airport.
