Overview Ramalingeswara group of temples is located near the banks of the Vegavathi river in the Chittoor district of Andhra Pradesh. The temples are dedicated to Lord Shiva and Vishnu and are considered to be one of the oldest and most renowned temple complexes in the country. Considered to be one of the earliest Siva temples in South India, it is believed the group of temples was built by the Pallava dynasty ruler Mahendravarma in the 6th century. Prominent Features The temples stand out for its unique architecture, with intricate carvings of gods and goddess adorning temple walls as well as shrines dedicated to various Hindu deities including Shiva, Vishnu, Parvati, Ganesha, Mahalakshmi, Kartikeya and many more. In addition to this, special prayer halls and separate sanctums dedicated to each god make the place more remarkable. History It is believed that the temple complex was built by the Pallava dynasty ruler Mahendravarman in the 6th century. During the next 1000 years, the temples have been renovated many times by the various rulers and dynasties that have conquered it. The complex was extensively repaired and renovated in the 18th century by the Mahants of the Tirupati Devasthanam. Interesting Facts The oldest temple in the complex is the Ramalingeswara temple which was built in the 6th century by Mahendravarma. The complex houses some of the oldest idols in South India including a 6 feet long (1.8 meters) Lord Vishnu made from a single piece of rock. The temple also features intricately carved structures depicting stories from the Hindu epics, Ramayana and Mahabharata as well as animals, gods and goddesses.
