Overview:
Arjuna's Penance, Mamallapuram is an ancient temple complex located in the town of Mahabalipuram (otherwise known as Mamallapuram), situated in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. The complex is believed to have been created by the Pallava kings of the 7th to 8th century and is the world’s largest bas relief sculpture. It depicts the mythology of Hindu Epic Mahabharata and is divided into two parts; Arjuna’s penance side and Krishna’s coronation side. This national monument of India portrays the history and culture of the country.
History:
The temple complex is made up of two large boulders and carved into them is a huge relief sculpture consisting of more than 200 individual figures that represent scenes from Hindu mythology. One of the most striking features of the complex is the large natural rock cut Nandi bull. This large figure is carved out of a single monolithic rock and is 22 feet in length and 13 feet in height. Another prominent feature of Arjuna's Penance is the large Trimurti, which is the three-headed deity forming the image of Lord Shiva in the middle, Brahma to his left, and Vishnu to His right.
