Overview:
wara Temple is a renowned Hindu temple located in Melpadi, the southern state of Tamil Nadu, India. This temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is believed to have been constructed by the illustrious ruler of the Chola Dynasty, Raja Raja Chola I. It is believed that Lord Shiva himself had instructed King Raja Raja Chola to build this magnificent temple. The temple is well-known for its intricate structural design, grandeur and majestic architecture. The temple consists of a massive Rajagopuram and a sanctum Sanctorum enclosed within beautiful high walls. The idols of Lord Vinayaka, Lord Murugan and Goddess Parvati are enshrined in the temple. This national monument of India portrays the history and culture of the country.
History:
The most prominent feature of the Choleswara Temple is its 13 storey tall Rajagopuram, which stands at a height of 176 feet and makes it one of the tallest temple towers in South India. Apart from the main temple complex, this temple also houses a number of sub-shrines dedicated to other gods and goddesses such as Lord Rama, Ganesha, Lord Murugan, Hanuman and Nandi. The Choleswara Temple was built in the year 1012 AD by the powerful Chola King Raja Raja Chola I. It is said that King Raja Raja Chola I had a dream in which Lord Shiva instructed him to build this temple. Construction of this temple took the king almost five years to complete.
