Overview:
Rani-ki-vav is a renowned stepwell located in the town of Patan in Gujarat. The vault of the stepwell consists of seven levels reached by a flight of stairs containing carvings of gods and goddesses, mythical creatures and scenes from everyday life. The well is the deepest and most ornately decorated stepwell in its time and today, it is considered one of the finest examples of Hindu art in the country. This national monument of India portrays the history and culture of the country.
History:
Rani-ki-vav is known for its elaborate architecture and intricate carving. The stepwell is constructed in the Maru-Gurjara architectural style, with sublime ornamentation of figure sculptures, intricate long carvings and beautiful friezes inside. The walls of the stepwell depict idols, scenes from battles and stories from the Hindu mythology, with the sculptures being made from hard-fired red sandstone blocks and yellow sandstone from Rajasthan. Interesting facts:
Rani-ki-vav was included in UNESCO’s list of World Heritage Sites in 2014. The stepwell is 120 feet (36.66m) long, 64 feet (19.51m) wide and 27 feet (8.23m) deep, boasting over 500 sculptures and carvings of Hindu deities and a variety of other bird and animal figures.
