Rajon-ki-Bain with Mosque and Chhatri Overview Rajon-ki-Bain is an architectural ensemble that consists of a mosque, a chhatri (shrine), and a baoli (stepwell). It is situated in Jama Masjid, Delhi, India. The ensemble is believed to have been built during the Ghilzai dynasty in the 17th century, though the exact date is uncertain. This architectural complex was declared a ‘Protected Monument’ by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) in 1902. It is an example of the fusion of Hindu, Muslim, and Central Asian architectural styles. Prominent Features The Rajon-ki-Bain with Mosque and Chhatri consists of a square stepped tank, a mosque, and a chhatri. The baoli, the main attraction of the complex, is a four-storied stepwell adorned with terracotta floral ornamentations. The steps of the well descend gradually to a vaulted gateway at the entrance of the mosque which is decorated with beautifully carved arabesque designs. The mosque has two minarets which are fluted and in white marble. The chhatri is situated at the center of the courtyard of the mosque and is surrounded by four walls with multiple arches on each side. History The Rajon-ki-Bain with Mosque and Chhatri was built during the early 17th century. It is believed that the complex was built by a minister of Akbar’s court, Muhammad Shah Ghilzai, who is also credited with the construction of Jama Masjid. The mosque was inherited by his son, Jahan Zeb, and later by his grandson, Chote Miyan, to whom the complex owes its current name.
