Old Palace of Bahadur Shah II alias Lal Mahal in Mehrauli Overview The Old Palace of Bahadur Shah II alias Lal Mahal is a historic building situated in Mehrauli, Delhi, India. The palace was constructed in 1526 by Mughal emperor Jalal-ud-din who was later called Bahadur Shah II. The palace is located close to the nearby Ghata Masjid and Qutb Minar complex, and was a part of the same complex until the mid-20th century. Prominent Features The palace is an impressive structure, constructed out of red sandstone and intricate marble work on the interior walls. The palace features an entryway with a huge arched gateway, two pillared hallways and a large dome structure with a small opening. The interior of the palace is characterized by its arches, domes and intricate stucco work. The palace also has a large central courtyard, with a large water tank in one end of it. History The Old Palace of Bahadur Shah II was constructed in 1526 A.D. for the third Mughal Emperor Jalal-ud-din Bahadur Shah II. The palace was completed during the reign of his successor, Humayun. Following the death of Humayun and the subsequent reign of Akbar, the palace was used by the Mughal emperors as their principal residence until Aurangzeb’s reign. The palace was abandoned in the late 18th century, and fell into disuse and disrepair. The palace was restored in the mid-20th century, when it gained the name of Lal Mahal. Interesting Facts The Old Palace of Bahadur Shah II was the first residential palace constructed in Delhi by the Mughals. It is also the first monument to be listed as a protected heritage site in Delhi, as well as the first monument to be declared a notified monument in India. The palace is said to be haunted, as people have reported sightings of an ethereal figure who is believed to be Bahadur Shah II himself.
