Megalithic Cists and Cairns, Nedungal Overview Megalithic cists and cairns, also known as megalithic tombs or dolmens, are monuments consisting of large stone structures often used for burial or ritualistic purposes. The megalithic cemetery of Nedungal, located in southwestern India, consists of 122 cists and cairns, many of which date back to 4,000 BC. The cist burials in Nedungal are made up of slabs arranged in an oval or circular shape to house numerous human remains. Along with cists, a few brick and stone cairns have also been discovered in the cemetery. Prominent Features The most distinguishing feature of Nedungal’s megalithic cists and cairns is the presence of large stones weighing up to 700 kg. These stones have been decorated with intricate carvings and often feature decorative figures, marks, or animal figures known as the “zoomorphic” motifs. History Nedungal’s megalithic cists and cairns were first discovered in the late 19th century and were extensively explored in the early 20th century by archaeologist Clifford Symes. Symes’s expeditions revealed numerous artifacts, including stone and ceramic pots, carnelian beads, and iron tools, all of which suggest that the site was used by an early Neolithic people some 4,000 years ago. Interesting Facts The megalithic cists and cairns of Nedungal make up one of the largest megalithic sites in India. The site also contains a variety of other megalithic monuments, such as menhirs, pillar-stones, stone circles, stone walls, and large fortified structures called cherus. Furthermore, the cemetery is located close to the legendary Pamban estuary, which is traditionally believed to have been the entrance of the Kingdom of Ravana from Hindu mythology.
